London’s Towering Inferno

The disastrous west London Grenfell Tower blaze was a real-life version of the 1974 Hollywood “Towering Inferno” thriller.

As of Friday, the confirmed death toll was 30, the number expected to rise exponentially, likely dozens more.

Many others required hospitalization, at least 18 in critical condition. Dozens of building residents remain unaccounted for.

Images of the building’s floors ablaze were terrifying, for many escape impossible – for some others, jumping to their death was the only way to avoid incineration, a horrible way to die.

Hundreds of working-class residents were in the 24-story building when fire broke out on June 14 at around 1:00AM, quickly spreading to upper floors – creating a devastating towering inferno.

Images of the charred remains bear testimony to the blaze’s ferocity – and the criminality of UK authorities for letting it happen, their unacceptable neoliberal policies responsible.

No fire alarm alerted residents, no building sprinkler system, no evacuation plan in case of serious fire, and just one stairwell for the structure – clear design flaws for greater developer profits, government negligence and criminality responsible for permitting them.

Firefighters’ ladders only extended up to 12 floors. Residents were told to stay in their units, keeping doors closed with wet towels sealing crevices to keep the blaze from spreading to their apartments.

In normal fires it usually works, not at Grenfell Tower because the intense fire spread quickly, engulfing virtually everything in its path.

For years, the Grenfell Action Group residents’ organization warned about lax safety standards to no avail.

Nothing was done to correct faulty electrical wiring and emergency lighting, lack of sprinkler and fire alarm systems, as well as various other issues of concern – making the building unsafe to live in.

This type regulatory laxity is inexcusable everywhere. Yet it’s all to commonplace in poor or low-income areas – in Western and other societies, putting human lives and welfare at risk.

In the wake of London’s Grenfell Tower blaze, thousands protested publicly for immediate remedial action. “We want justice,” demonstrators demanded.

“May must go.” “Shame on you.” Key is pressuring Westminster and London authorities for responsible change. Allowing residents to live in death traps is unconscionable, including ones with no evacuation plan in case of serious fire.

The Grenfell Tower disaster was caused by indifference to the welfare of ordinary and poor Brits, gentrification reducing the affordable housing stock, force-fed austerity to benefit the country’s rich, and Thatcherite notions of the unacceptability of public housing in a “property-owning democracy.”

On Friday, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn tweeted: “Can @Theresa_May and @David_Cameron hear the voices of the victims of their party’s vicious ideology? Shame on you.”

Labour MP David Lammy called the Grenfell Tower disaster “corporate manslaughter…totally unacceptable (to allow this) to happen…People should be held to account.”

The avoidable disaster reflects criminality at the highest levels of UK governance.

Like America and other Western societies, Britain serves its privileged class and foreign investors exclusively at the expense of its most vulnerable – a shocking indictment of destructive predatory capitalism.

Fear-Mongering Following Saturday Night London Incident

Fear-Mongering Following Saturday Night London Incident | theresa-may-1024x682 | Mainstream Media World News

Theresa May

It’s unknown if what happened was terrorism by lone wolves, a false flag or something else.

It’s well-known how the aftermath of these type events play out. State-sponsored war OF terror follows or escalates at home and abroad, facilitated by fever-pitch fear-mongering, media scoundrels part of the scheme.

Their reports repeat official accounts of what happened, suspects like three alleged lethally shot London assailants considered guilty by accusation, unable to explain their side of the story.

Headlines are used to influence reader opinions more than content following them. Here’s a sampling from Western media broadsheets:

The NYT: “ ‘Enough Is Enough,’ “Prime Minister Says After Terrorists Kill 7 in Heart of London”

The NYT: “It was Utter Horror”

The neocon/CIA-connected Washington Post: “London attack toll rises to 7 dead as Theresa May insists ‘things need to change’ “ – ignoring the treat her government represents, what needs changing most of all.

WaPo: “London Bridge will never fall down”

WSJ: “Seven Killed in London Terrorist Attack – Theresa May says more must be done to stop radicalization; police arrest 12” – likely having nothing to do with what happened. Expect lots of witch-hunt injustice to follow.

WSJ: “In Just Eight Minutes, Early Summer Revelries Are Shattered”

Chicago Tribune: “London terror attack – 12 arrested in London as May says Britain must contain extremism” – failing to explain its epicenter is at No. 10 and neocon-infested parliament.

Los Angeles Times: “ ‘You won’t break us. You won’t break us, ever.’ London defiant as police arrest 12 (patsies) in bridge attack”

Reuters: “ ‘Enough is enough,’ says May as London recovers”

AP News: British Police Arrest 12 as Londoners Recall Night of Terror”

AP News: “The Latest: Police Confident All London Attackers Shot Dead” – state terrorists remain around, active, menacing populations at home and abroad

Al Jazeera: “May: UK election to go ahead despite London attack”

Al Jazeera: “ ‘Evil, evil people:’ Panic and horror at London Bridge”

London Guardian: “London Bridge attack: seven dead and 21 more victims in critical condition”

London Guardian: “ ‘They were stabbing everyone’ – Witnesses describe horror of attack”

London’s Independent: “Terror strikes Britain again: Seven killed and 48 in hospital after London attack”

London Daily Mail: “Terrorist in an Arsenal shirt and his hooded jihadi accomplices were filmed sauntering into Borough Market moments after mowing down pedestrians in attack which killed seven and injured 48”

London Daily Mail: “BREAKING NEWS: Member of public caught in police crossfire as officers fired ‘unprecedented 50 rounds of bullets’ at attackers they thought were wearing suicide vests.”

London Telegraph: “They shouted ‘this is for Allah,’ as they stabbed indiscriminately’ – How the London terror attack unfolded.”

All we know so far is the central London incident happened Saturday night, reports indicating seven deaths, 48 others injured, many seriously, and the alleged assailants lethally shot by police.

Official reports about these type incidents are suspect. Believe none of them at face value. Perhaps more will be known later on.

It’s always important to ask who benefits? Clearly not ordinary Brits or people abroad UK forces attack in cahoots with Washington.

There’s lots more to fear following Saturday’s incident – from state sponsors of terrorism, the most ruthlessly dangerous of all.

Anti-Syria UK MPs Want Assad’s Wife Stripped of Her British Citizenship

Anti-Syria UK MPs Want Assad’s Wife Stripped of Her British Citizenship | syrian-president-wife-asma-al-assad-stripped-of-uk-citizenship-792687 | Special Interests World News

(image: Getty)

Asma Assad was born and raised in London. British law permits revoking citizenship of nationals on grounds of supporting terrorist activities.

Hardline Liberal Democrat MP Tom Brake said Britain’s government should tell her to “either stop using (her) position to defend barbaric acts or be stripped of (her) citizenship,” accusing her of harming UK interests – wanting her husband illegally ousted as Syria’s legitimate leader, he failed to explain.

A Home Office spokesperson said “we cannot discuss individual cases, but the Home Secretary can deprive individuals of their citizenship where it is conducive to the public good…”

According to London’s Sunday Times, UK MPs disgracefully accused her of spreading Syrian propaganda – for praising her country’s “martyrs” and “accus(ing) the West of spreading lies.”

In response to Trump’s April 7 aggression, illegally striking Syria’s Shayrat airbase, she said “(t)he presidency of the Syrian Arab Republic affirms that what America has done is an irresponsible act that only reflects a short-sightedness, a narrow horizon, a political and military blindness to reality and a naive pursuit of a frenzied false propaganda campaign.”

Exposing Western crimes doesn’t go down well in Washington, London or other NATO capitals. Truth-telling on vital issues is considered propaganda.

The Sunday Times:

“…MPs and Syrians in the UK urged the Home Office to remove her British citizenship to send a strong signal to her husband’s murderous regime.”

This type deplorable rubbish is typical Western propaganda – nations, their officials, even wives viciously and irresponsibly attacked.

The London Times:

“The time has come where we go after Assad in every which way, including people like Mrs Assad, who is very much part of the propaganda machine that is committing war crimes,” quoting Tory MP Nadhim Zahawi, a foreign affairs committee member.

Since 2010, Britain revoked the citizenship of 40 nationals for dubious reasons – mainly on suspicions of involvement in or supporting terrorism.

Asma and Bashar al-Assad courageously support the interests of their nation and people – including by truth-telling about US-led naked aggression, raping and destroying the Syrian Arab Republic.

By 2020 Two-Thirds Of Wild Animals Will Have Been Wiped Out Over A 50 Year Period As Mass Die-Offs Accelerate All Over The Planet

By 2020 Two-Thirds Of Wild Animals Will Have Been Wiped Out Over A 50 Year Period As Mass Die-Offs Accelerate All Over The Planet | Extinction-Public-Domain | Environment Sleuth Journal Special Interests

It has been called “the long extinction”.  Our planet is in the process of dying, and as you will see below, this process of death and destruction appears to be accelerating.  According to a report that was put out by the World Wildlife Fund and the Zoological Society of London, the number of wild animals around the globe appears to be decreasing at a rate of about 2 percent a year.  2 percent may not sound like a lot to you, but over 10 years that would mean that 20 percent of all wild animals in the world would be gone.  And according to that same report, it is being projected that the total loss of wildlife during the 50 year period from 1970 to 2020 will be a staggering 67 percent

The number of wild animals living on Earth is set to fall by two-thirds by 2020, according to a new report, part of a mass extinction that is destroying the natural world upon which humanity depends.

The analysis, the most comprehensive to date, indicates that animal populations plummeted by 58% between 1970 and 2012, with losses on track to reach 67% by 2020. Researchers from WWF and the Zoological Society of London compiled the report from scientific data and found that the destruction of wild habitats, hunting and pollution were to blame.

In other words, we are watching a global slow-motion extinction event which will ultimately claim hundreds, if not thousands, of species.

And as I mentioned above, this slow-motion extinction event appears to be accelerating.

In recent years, mass die-off events have been popping up in the headlines with startling regularity.  Fish, birds and animals are dying off all over the planet in absolutely frightening numbers.  One website that tracks these things says that there have been 152 mass death events in 48 different countries so far this year.

When something happens on the other side of the world, most Americans don’t seem to care very much, so let me share with you just a couple of examples of this phenomenon from inside the United States.  This first example comes from Atlanta

Someone, or something, is killing thousands of birds in Atlanta. Since spring, the death toll began rising every week.

For Atlanta office workers, the dead birds are a sad sight at their doorstep. Now, Audubon Society volunteers are tracking and finding the dead or dying birds, many of them in Sandy Springs, Dunwoody and Buckhead.

If the death of thousands of birds in Atlanta does not get your attention, perhaps the death of millions of fish on the west coast will.  The following comes from Natural News

As the salmon are dying by the millions, the government issued an emergency order along the western U.S. coast to cancel the spring king, or Chinook, salmon fishing activities. According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, salmon runs have dropped to record levels. Experts predict that the return of spawning Chinook salmon to the Klamath River will hit its lowest point ever this fall. It will be a huge challenge and difficult year for ocean salmon fishermen, especially in Oregon and California, reported the Council Chair Herb Pollard.

“We’ve been in a period of low productivity, not just on the Taku, but on several rivers up and down the coast,” said Juneau Area Management Biologist Daniel Teske, who expects a second-straight year of record-low salmon returning to their birthplace. Teske added that he is almost certain that the increased die-off must be happening in the ocean since all four rivers are being affected by low returns of the Southeast king salmon.

Of course the cold, hard reality of the matter is that everything around us is in the process of dying and deteriorating, and this even includes the human race.

If you don’t believe this, you may want to consider research from Cambridge University that found that human bodies are “significantly smaller” than they were thousands of years ago and that human brains are also smaller than they once were…

An earlier study by Cambridge University found that mankind is shrinking in size significantly.

Experts say humans are past their peak and that modern-day people are 10 percent smaller and shorter than their hunter-gatherer ancestors.

And if that’s not depressing enough, our brains are also smaller.

The findings reverse perceived wisdom that humans have grown taller and larger, a belief which has grown from data on more recent physical development.

On top of all that, scientists have known for a very long time that the human race is heading for an inevitable “mutational meltdown”.  The following is an excerpt from a study that was originally published by Gerald H. McKibben and Everett C. McKibben…

Geneticists have long worried about the impact of mutations on the human population, and that at a rate of one deleterious mutation per person per generation, genetic deterioration would result. Earlier reports were based on estimates of mutation rates considerable lower than what we now know to be the case. Findings going back to 2002 show that the human mutation rate is at least 100 mistakes (misspellings) per person per generation. Some scientists believe the rate is closer to 300.

Even a rate of 100 has profound implications, and the mutation rate is itself increasing. Furthermore, most, if not all, mutations in the human genome must be deleterious.  “And nothing can reverse the damage that has been done during our own generation, even if further mutations could be stopped.”  It would appear that the process is an irreversible downward spiral that will end in “mutational meltdown”.

If you didn’t grasp all of that, let me break it down for you very simply.

The human race is on borrowed time, and at some point our DNA will be so full of harmful mutations that we will no longer be able to continue.

If all of what I have just shared was not enough, scientists have also discovered that the entire universe is actually in the process of dying.  The following comes from CNN

The conclusion of a new astronomical study pulls no punches on this. “The Universe is slowly dying,” it reads.

Astronomers have believed as much for years, but the new findings establish the cosmos’ decline with unprecedented precision.

The experts that conducted this study found that the universe is only producing about half as much energy as it once did.  As the amount of energy continues to decline, all of the lights will slowly go out until none are left.  Or as one scientist put it, the universe “is about to nod off for an eternal doze”

The universe has basically sat down on the sofa, pulled up a blanket and is about to nod off for an eternal doze,” said astronomer Simon Driver, who led the team.

We can certainly do some things to try to prevent the mass animal extinctions that are happening all over the planet, but nothing that we can do can stop the deterioration of human DNA or the slow death of the entire universe.

Hopefully what I have shared here will help many to understand that everything around us is just temporary.  Our world and everything in it will pass away, and perhaps we should spend the little time that we do have on this planet focusing on the things that really matter.

Three-Month-Old “Terrorist Baby” Summoned To US Embassy In London For Interview

Three-Month-Old “Terrorist Baby” Summoned To US Embassy In London For Interview | baby | Special Interests World News

By: Lily Dane, The Daily Sheeple |

Yes, you read that headline right.

Because his grandfather accidentally checked the wrong box on a visa waiver form, a three-month-old boy was forced to appear at the US embassy in London for an interview.

From The Guardian:

Harvey Kenyon-Cairns had been due to fly to Orlando in Florida for his first overseas holiday, until his grandfather Paul Kenyon made the error on a visa waiver form.

On the part of the Esta form which reads “Do you seek to engage in or have you ever engaged in terrorist activities, espionage, sabotage, or genocide?” Kenyon ticked yes instead of no.

He only learned of his error when his grandson’s travel was refused. “I couldn’t believe that they couldn’t see it was a genuine mistake and that a three-month-old baby would be no harm to anyone,” said the 62-year-old.

Okay, first of all…how likely is it that an actual terrorist would answer YES to that question anyway?

Also – of all entities – government agencies should be VERY aware that clerical errors occur and humans do make mistakes. You’d think “someone in charge” would take that into consideration here.

But, no. Of course, common sense did not prevail. Baby and family had to make a 10-hour round trip to the embassy to be questioned by officials.

Kenyon said the mix-up cost him an extra £3,000 ($3,800), as the new visa didn’t arrive in time for the family’s flights:

“It was a very expensive mistake, but I was hoping the US embassy would realise that it was just a simple error without us having to jump through all the hoops.”

Regarding how the interview went, Kenyon said,

Baby Harvey was good as gold for the interview and never cried once. I thought about taking him along in an orange jumpsuit, but thought better of it. They didn’t appear to have a sense of humour over it at all and couldn’t see the funny side.

He’s obviously never engaged in genocide, or espionage, but he has sabotaged quite a few nappies in his time, though I didn’t tell them that at the US embassy.

Baby Harvey and his parents ended up being a few days late for their Florida vacation because of the error.

London Attack: Terrorism, Other Type Street Violence or False Flag?

London Attack: Terrorism, Other Type Street Violence or False Flag? | london-attack | False Flags World News

Each time violent incidents occur in Europe or America, they’re automatically called terrorism – despite no credible evidence proving it.

Last Wednesday’s incident in London left five dead, numerous others injured. Police lethally shot the alleged attacker. Dead men tell no tales.

Weeks earlier, Britain’s senior counterintelligence officer Mark Rowley said UK security services run more than 500 simultaneous terror-related investigations, resulting in numerous arrests, solely on the basis of suspicions, not credible evidence of wrongdoing or intent.

For years, state-owned BBC and other UK media hyped the threat of Islamic terrorism, similar to what goes on in America irresponsibly – presstitution substituting for responsible journalism.

Rowley claimed authorities foiled over a dozen potential terrorist attacks in recent years through so-called public tips – failing to explain how criminality can be detected if no crime occurred.

Post-9/11, numerous headline-making, high-profile violent incidents in America, Britain, France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, and Norway were automatically called terrorist attacks.

All were state-sponsored false flags perpetrated to hype fear. Hysteria replaced reason. Innocent patsies were falsely blamed – part of a diabolical plot to advance interests harming millions domestically and abroad.

Crackdowns on freedom replaced rule of law protections. Imperial wars were launched, ongoing in multiple theaters, collective Muslims demonized as a convenient enemy of choice.

Hyped fear continues gripping Europe and America, heightened by Wednesday’s London attack, 200 meters from Parliament Square.

A virtual state of emergency exists in central London, plans to extend it city-wide, perhaps to be followed in other European cities beyond repressive measures already in place.

UK media said London police are treating Wednesday’s incident as terrorism. Westminster is on lockdown. Its underground station was closed, nearby streets cordoned off to traffic. Security forces are deployed in force.

At one point on Wednesday, police armed with guns and protective shields marched into parliament, an extraordinary surreal action.

London’s Guardian said the alleged attacker was known to counterterrorism officials, “his connections and associates” being investigated.

Without corroborating evidence, Mark Rowley called the attacker’s motivation “Islamist related,” inspired by ISIS, though most likely he was a “lone actor.”

Prime Minister Theresa May called the incident “sick and depraved,” adding Britain’s threat level remains severe.

“The location of this attack was no accident,” she blustered. “The terrorists chose to strike at the heart of our capital city where all nationalities, religions and cultures come together to celebrate the values of liberty, democracy and freedom of speech.”

Her hyperbole sounded pre-scripted. Unknown so far is whether Wednesday’s incident was terrorism as claimed, street violence unrelated to terrorism, or a state-sponsored false flag.

The incident’s high-profile nature, capturing world headlines, creates obvious suspicions about whether what occurred may have been other than what’s reported – especially given numerous false flags in Western cities in recent years.

Perhaps Wednesday’s London attack was the latest. The alleged perpetrator isn’t alive to explain.

UKIP Leader Farage’s Resignation: Another Brexit Body Blow

 nigel-farange-resigns

Outspoken Brexit supporter, former London mayor Boris Johnson, leading candidate to succeed David Cameron as prime minister, pulled out of the race days earlier.

A previous article speculated on if he was pushed, powerful anti-Brexiteer interests on both sides the Atlantic going all-out to maintain unity – disregarding popular sentiment.

Boris Johnson’s surprise announcement was the first shot across the bow, followed by likely orchestrated London anti-Brexit street protests.

And now Eurosceptic Nigel Farage, Brexit’s leading advocate, a European parliament member, two-time UKIP leader, announcing his resignation Monday, saying:

“During the referendum, I said I wanted my country back. Now I want my life back.”

“I have never been and I have never wanted to be a career politician. I couldn’t possibly achieve more than we managed to achieve in the referendum. So I think it’s right that I should stand aside as leader of UKIP.”

Was he pushed perhaps like Johnson or did he intend this all along? Draw your own conclusions. Britain’s two leading Brexit proponents, stepping out of the fray back-to-back, days after the June 23 vote raises suspicions.

They’re needed to help shepherd things toward Britain regaining its sovereign independence. Their absence makes it easier for anti-Brexit interests to prevent it – a virtual certainty, how things will play out to assure it beginning to unfold, lots more to come.

The will of the powerful virtually always prevails over popular sentiment, referendums most often exercises in futility. Exceptions prove the rule.

Venezuelan Bolivarian democracy Hugo Chavez instituted stands out. Following his December 1998 election, a national referendum was held in April 1999 on whether to convene a Constituent Assembly for a new constitution – strongly supported.

Popular sentiment prevailed. In July 1999, the Assembly was elected to draft a new constitution, its members largely Chavista supporters.

In December 1999, a national referendum to decide up or down on the proposed constitution won overwhelmingly, popular sentiment again prevailing.

In February 2012, Syria’s Assad let voters decide on whether to approve a new constitution – including 14 new articles, 37 amended ones and another 34 reformulated from its proposed draft.

Political pluralism was established for the first time. So were presidential term limits and press freedom. Despite Obama’s war raging, turnout exceeded 57%, approval over 89%.

Ordinary Syrians got to decide whether or not to adopt their nation’s constitutions, bedrock governing documents – unheard of most elsewhere, real democracy, absent in Western societies and most others.

Previous articles explained Brexit voting was non-binding, a meaningless exercise, parliamentarians alone deciding if Britain stays or leaves the EU – the former choice virtually certain.

Powerful US/EU/UK interests won’t tolerate divorce. What they want they’ll get.

Boris Johnson Quits Tory Leadership Race

On June 30, former London mayor Boris Johnson, Tory frontrunner to succeed David Cameron, dropped out of the race, the latest surprise in the ongoing Brexit saga.

Was it voluntary or was he pushed, pressured by US and EU power brokers, wanting an anti-Brexiteer or weak-kneed supporter – easily swayed to go the other way once becoming Tory leader?

Media gathered to hear what was expected to be a leadership campaign launching address were surprised, Johnson saying “having consulted colleagues and in view of the circumstances in parliament, I have concluded that (the new prime minister) cannot be me.”

“My role will be to give every possible support to the next Conservative administration to make sure that we properly fulfill the mandate of the people that was delivered at the referendum and to champion the agenda that I believe in, to stick up for the forgotten people of this country.”

“And, if we do so, if we invest in our children and improve their life chances, if we continue to fuel the engines of social mobility, if we build on the great reforming legacy of David Cameron, if we invest in our infrastructure and we follow a sensible, one nation Conservative approach that is simultaneously tax-cutting and pro-enterprise, then I believe that this country can win and be better and more wonderful and, yes, greater than ever before.”

Johnson supports neoliberal harshness. So will Cameron’s successor. After saying he backed Johnson’s bid, MP Michael Gove entered the race, saying London’s former mayor lacks leadership skills, promising “a new approach to running this country.”

Isn’t that what they all say, lofty rhetoric forgotten straightaway once entering office. On Friday, Home Secretary Theresa May announced her candidacy to succeed Cameron.

“Our country needs strong proven leadership to steer us through this period of political and economic uncertainty,” she said. “We need leadership that can unite our party and our country.”

She ruled out a second referendum. So did Cameron. “Brexit means Brexit,” she added. “The campaign was fought. The vote was held. Turnout was high, and the public gave their verdict.”

Instead of supporting it straightaway, she equivocated, a clear red flag, saying Lisbon Treaty Article 50, beginning separation proceedings legally, “should not be invoked before the end of the year.”

Six months is a lifetime. A new US president-elect will be known. Lots of time between now and then can be used for shenanigans, manipulating public sentiment – diverting attention from separation, creating a fictitious threat, enlisting support for unity to confront it.

Confrontation with Russia or China would serve the same purpose. So would manufactured economic and financial turmoil – roiling markets, creating angst, convincing people unity is the way to smooth things.

It remains to be seen who’ll become new Tory prime minister. It’ll be a candidate US and EU monied interests support, someone against Brexit, regardless of what’s said publicly – able to enlist majority voter support for unity, not separation.

Watch for something like this to unfold ahead. The key point is power brokers on both sides of the Atlantic won’t let Brexit happen. They’ll find a way to assure it and get most Brits to go along.

Ignore political rhetoric at all times. Follow events as they unfold.

Google Now Has Access To Millions Of Patients’ Medical Records

doctor-google

By: Michaela Whitton, Anti-Media |

United Kingdom — A controversial deal between tech giant Google and the National Health Service (NHS) will allow artificial intelligence units access to 1.6 million confidential medical records. Since 2014, Google has partnered with several scientists in an attempt to understand human health, but a new report reveals the data gathering goes far beyond what was originally anticipated.

According to documents obtained by the New Scientist, the data sharing agreement between Google-owned artificial intelligence company DeepMind and the Royal Free NHS Trust gives access to the sensitive healthcare data of millions of NHS patients. The chilling and wide-reaching deal allows DeepMind access to the medical records of the 1.6 million people passing annually through the three London hospitals owned by the Trust — Barnet, Chase Farm, and the Royal Free.

The Google-owned A.I. firm announced in February it was working with the NHS to build an app called Streams — intended to help hospitals monitor patients with kidney disease. However, the new information has revealed that the extent of the data being shared goes much further and includes logs of day-to-day hospital activity, records of the location and status of patients, and even logs of who visits them and when.

Results of pathology and radiology tests are also shared, as is information from critical care and accident and emergency departments. In addition, DeepMind’s access to the centralised records of all NHS hospital treatments in the U.K. means the tech company can access historical data from the last five years, all while receiving a continuous stream of new data.

At the same time, DeepMind is developing a platform called Patient Rescue, which uses hospital data streams to build tools to carry out analysis and support diagnostic decisions. The New Scientist explained how it works:

“Comparing a new patient’s information with millions of other cases, Patient Rescue might be able to predict that they are in the early stages of a disease that has not yet become symptomatic, for example. Doctors could then run tests to see if the prediction is correct.”

While the Royal Free has not yet responded to the question of what — if any — opt-out mechanisms are available to patients, the New Scientist suggests this is unlikely to be a straightforward process. Despite the agreement stating Google cannot use the data in any other part of the company’s business, many will be seriously wary of the access the online tech giant now has to the confidential data of millions of people.

As the New Scientist wrote:

“Data mining is the name of the game in the burgeoning field of machine learning and artificial intelligence, and there’s no company in the world better at that than Google.”

The 1916 Irish Uprising Against British Imperialism

irish revolution 1916

With the Easter Rising of 1916, the world was introduced to the eulogy of Pax Britannica. Much like the coercion used by the Roman Empire, the British Crown were masters at colonial repression and exploitation of royal holdings. The long strained history between the Emerald Isle and the City of London dates back many centuries. From the punitive exploits of Oliver Cromwell to the use of the Auxiliary Division of the Royal Irish Constabulary (ADRIC), the shrift shed blood on both sides. Independence comes at a high price when the imperium masters dig in to keep their rule in place.

Easter Rising 1916 is a short but excellent overview of the circumstances and developments of that fateful revolt. The context is well stated in this quote.

“Ireland is too great to be unconnected with us, and too near us to be dependant on a foreign state, and too little to be independent.”  C.T. Grenville to the Duke of Rutland, December 3, 1784 (H.M.C. 14 report app. 1, p. 155) This statement sums up the attitude of Great Britain toward Ireland from the twelfth century to the twentieth.”

For an even more descriptive revelation of the era, review the 50 facts about the Easter Rising (in PHOTOS). This history is not often taught in our educational institutions and certainly not featured in the mass media multiculturalism programming that stresses amnesia from the reality of a mere century ago.

So what was this uprising all about? Shaun Harkin offers this established view of Ireland’s Easter Rising against colonial rule. However, he provides a much different evaluation, a century later in the conclusion of his essay.

“HISTORIAN PIERS Brendon, author of The Decline and Fall of the British Empire, described the immense impact of the Irish Rising as “blasting the widest breach in the ramparts of the British Empire since Yorktown,” referring to the decisive victory over the British Army during the American Revolutionary War.

In the early 1900s, Britain held 50 colonies and 345 million people under its rule. By 1914, the economic competition between Britain and the other imperial powers spilled over into an all-out industrial war for geopolitical dominance across the globe.

The rising was designed to inflict the maximum damage to the prestige of the British Empire while it was consumed with war on the continent. Ireland, Britain’s oldest and closest colony, defied imperial rule, and others under the boot of the Union Jack would follow.”

Substitute the Irish liberation struggle for the name of countless other ethnic societies and subjugated colonies from their oppressor empires, and the pattern is similar. Yet the Irish revolt has its own unique significance.

In a well thought out account, David Reynolds writes in As the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising approaches, the history wars in Ireland still rage.

“Thinking of Ireland comparatively, the country was distinctive among national revolutions of the era in at least three important respects. First, a serious national rising took place during the war – in fact, right in the middle – rather than at the end, amid the turmoil of 1918. The latter was the pattern across central and eastern Europe, resulting in new states such as Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. Second, Ireland’s war of independence was waged successfully against a victor power, not – as in the Balkans or the Baltic states – against one of the defeated empires. This was part of the global appeal of the Irish struggle, not least in the United States, where it could easily be enfolded into the American saga of 1776 and all that. And yet, third, the victor imperial power hung on in the north-east of the country – not just for a few years but right up to the present day. Hence, for hardline republican nationalists, then and now, the continuing affront of an unfinished revolution.”

The British Empire would hang on until World War II, but the “troubles” in Ireland brought the culmination of century’s old tension to an open conflict.

An international perspective is given by Liam Ó Ruairc in The global-historical significance of the 1916 Rising.

“The Easter Rising also had a significant impact on imperial rule. Leading establishment figures saw Ireland as a vital link in the chain that bound the British Empire together, so to lose Ireland would mean to lose the Empire. “If we lose Ireland we have lost the Empire,” declared Chief of the Imperial General Staff and Field-Marshal Sir Henry Wilson on 30 March 1921.  After the 1916 Rising, Unionist leader Edward Carson warned the British government of the consequences of defeat in Ireland for the Empire: “If you tell your Empire in India, in Egypt, and all over the world that you do not got the men, the money, the pluck, the inclination and the backing to restore order in a country within twenty miles of your own shore, you may as well begin to abandon the attempt to make British rule prevail throughout the Empire at all.” In response to the Irish demand for independence, British Prime Minister David Lloyd George observed: “Suppose we gave it to them? It will lower the prestige and the dignity of this country and reduce British authority to a low point in Ireland itself. It will give the impression that we have lost grip, that the Empire has no further force and will have an effect on India and throughout Europe.”

The British state’s reaction to the Easter Rising is thus not to be understood purely in an Irish context; but in the overall context of its empire. On 29 May 1916, one month after the Easter Rising, British Prime Minister Lloyd George wrote to Unionist leader Edward Carson: “We must make it clear. . . that Ulster does not, whether she wills it or not, merge in the rest of Ireland.”

Often lost in the political reactions and responses of an immediate crisis of will, is the wisdom from previous generations that brings their own intuitive insights to future event. One such sage of Irish culture and politics is Edmund Burke and his interaction in the English Parliament.

While Edmund Burke and the Politics of Empire is a reflection of 18th century thought, the application to the continued struggle of the 1916 Easter Rising in important to understand the nature of religious differences, attitudes of loyalty to England and the prospects of representation versus egalitarian democracy. Burke’s perspective on the Easter Rising would certainly manifest the following sentiments, while maintaining a sense of order and respect for tradition. Yet, in all revolutions, rational balance seldom is the operating principle.

“While Burke supported extension of the franchise in Ireland, his support for voting rights, and for the need for Catholics to sit in the Irish Parliament, was not based on a Jacobite faith in the merits of equal representation. It was, rather, drawn from his moral-imaginative perspective on how society, and how moral and political behavior, are shaped. As Kirk puts it, Burke’s concern was that the continued exclusion of Catholics from Parliament amounted to the denial of “aristocratic leadership” to the Catholic community. Burke was not an elitist in the usual sense; he had denounced as oligarchical earlier efforts to provide a more limited Catholic franchise based on stringent property qualifications. He believed, however, in the need for a well-bred, educated, stable leadership class among the Irish Catholics. The political power exercised by members of the Irish Parliament was, in practice, greatly constrained, but they were public figures and in that respect could play an important role in shaping Irish politics and society.”

If Burke’s concerns about the excessive abuses from a Jacobite mindset applied to the most radical elements among IRA zealots, the fundamental expression of revolution with crossing O’Connell Bridge was a journey well worth mailing a letter of liberty at the Post Office.

Shaun Harkin concludes with his final assessment: “The 100th anniversary should be celebrated as a stand against imperialism and for Irish self-determination. However, the goals of the Irish revolution are still unmet. Ireland needs another rising involving millions opposed to austerity, imperial war and social injustice.”

Well, any ongoing clash of civilizations reverts to ugly consequences when a dominating empire seeks to control a resisting satellite protectorate. “Black and Tans” enforcers will either become executioners or carcasses from a death blow by a freedom fighter. The British Empire was able to extend their rule over much of the world by exploiting the divide and conquer strategy.

While the colonial era established advancement and enlightenment on many levels, the acculturation factor was acutely missing. Cultures are different for real reasons. The Irish are just as much different from the Kings English as the Scots are from their Brit neighbors. Imperialism does not recognize political self-determination. The lesson of the Easter Rising is that the desire for freedom from foreign oppression is universal.

For all their wealth of wisdom and heritage of Magna Carta, the English lose sight of their greatness when the British Crown wants to rule the world.
